THE RETURN

On April 20th, John Romero released The Return. The video, filmed on location in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, features John and long-time creative collaborator Adrian Carmack. John and Adrian met while working at Softdisk in Shreveport, LA (where id Software was also founded) and went on to co-found id Software and create the iconic Wolfenstein 3D®, DOOM®, DOOM® II and QuakeTM, the genre that both founded and cemented the genre that came to be known as the FPS. It was in those games, particularly DOOM, DOOM II and Quake, where Romero first displayed the abstract level design style for which he is best known. Similarly, in those games, Adrian established the dark and violent look that would set the stage for shooters for years to come.

As co-founders of id Software, John Romero and John Carmack created the code behind the company's seminal titles. The principles they defined through experience in id’s earliest days built upon one another to produce a unique methodology and a constantly shippable codebase.
